Frequesntly Asked Questions

  • What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry specialised in the correction of teeth and jaw irregularities as well as correction of bite problems.

  • Are There Lifestyle Changes I Should Make Before Getting Braces?

You should commit to healthy dental habits before you get your braces. Doing so will ensure that you have the most beautiful smile when your treatment is done.
The first thing you need to do is to learn the proper brushing and flossing technique while having braces on.
There are some foods you won’t be able to eat once you get braces. Your orthodontist will talk to you about them, but you may want to make note anyway.
You’ll have to stop consuming foods that are hard or sticky like candy, caramel, or ice. They can pop off your brackets and even bend wires. Sticky foods can get stuck on the wires and will be challenging to get off.
Popcorn kernels can get stuck under your braces or between your teeth. This can lead to gum inflammation or swelling.
If you participate in contact sports during your treatment, make sure to get a mouth guard from your Orthodontist as any injury to your face can lead to mouth, lip, or gum injuries from your braces.

  • What are Orthodontic Appliances?

Orthodontic appliances are corrective and supportive appliances designed and prescribed by an Orthodontist to treat dental irregularities such as crowded, crooked and protruded teeth which do not fit together. There are several types of appliances that serve different purposes.

Braces are most known and widely used. They can be made of metal, ceramic and other clear materials. Another line treatment modality called Invisible Orthodontics involves Lingual braces and Aligners.

Lingual braces are braces that are fixed facing the tongue(behind the teeth) and aligners are clear plastic trays which are used in a sequential manner, which helps in correction of teeth irregularities. These are great alternatives to the traditional braces and provide amore discreet treatment option. In a well co ordinated and controlled manner, these appliances gently force the teeth to move through the bone into their ideal and desired positions.

  • What advice can you give your patients?

A common misconception that I always come across is that braces treatment is only for teenagers or children and not for adults. Due to the latest advancements in technology, itis possible to get Orthodontic treatment for adults as well, provided that your teeth and gums are healthy. Many patients choose to correct teeth and jaw irregularities for their self esteem and cosmetic reasons only, but there are number of other real benefits of Orthodontic treatment done at the right time and at the right age. Straight teeth allow you to bite, chew and speak more effectively. They even take unnecessary pressure off gums, leading to a healthier mouth. So its always wise to consult an Orthodontist to check for any developing teeth or jaw irregularities and get it treated.

  • What are my hobbies?

Firstly, reading. Books always hold a special place in my heart. I'm more into non-fiction and autobigraphies. When I immerse myself in a good written novel, I get transported to different worlds, cultures and perspectives. I'm more into non-fiction and autobiographies. Swimming, although a physical activity, is my second hobby. It brings me a different kind of joy. It allows me to experience a sense of weightlessness and freedom. They both provide me to explore worlds beyond my own, dive into the depths of my imagination and find peace and tranquility admist the chaos of life.
